Harry S Truman, America's 34th Vice President, became the 33rd President of the United States after President Franklin D. Roosevelt died during his 4th term in office. Harry Truman was born in Missouri. His father was a farmer and livestock dealer. After graduating high school, Harry enlisted in the Missouri Army National Guard in 1905 and about 10 years later became a battery commander of an artillery regiment in France during World War II. As president, his famous motto was "The bucks stops here" and he had the unfortunate responsibility for ordering two American atomic bombs to be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in order to put an end to World War II. After his presidency was over, President Truman retired to Missouri and refused many offers to go on corporate payrolls. He lived a simple life until he died in 1972.
